KOLKATA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Australia head into Thursday's World Cup semi-final against South Africa with the same excitement in the dressing room that propelled them to their maiden triumph in the T20 World Cup in 2021, Glenn Maxwell said. Maxwell was part of Aaron Finch's groundbreaking squad in the United Arab Emirates in 2021 and scored an unbeaten 28 in the final against New Zealand. "The excitement of that match has given us a whole new belief going forward," Maxwell said in an interview with Australian broadcaster Fox Sports. "It reminded me of the T20 World Cup in 2021. "The feeling around the group was energetic, electric, exciting and everyone felt they were heading towards the same end goal.

Nov 9 (Reuters) - Paceman Josh Hazlewood expects Glenn Maxwell to face Bangladesh in Australia's final round-robin match at the World Cup this weekend despite the gruelling nature of his spectacular innings against Afghanistan on Tuesday. Maxwell suffered the excruciating pain of all body cramps at Wankhede Stadium as he scored an unbeaten double century that has been hailed as the greatest one-day international innings of all time by cricketing luminaries. The unlikely three-wicket victory sent Australia into a semi-final against South Africa and rendered Saturday's clash against Bangladesh in Pune a dead-rubber but Hazlewood reckons Maxwell will still suit up for the match. "He went down like he was a shot, lying down like a dead man on the floor," team physiotherapist Nick Jones recalled on Cricket Australia's website. Maxwell did get up and, despite struggling to move, relied on his natural batting instincts to complete the extraordinary innings.

PUNE, India, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes Glenn Maxwell's breath-taking shotmaking, best illustrated by his incendiary double hundred in Monday's World Cup match against Afghanistan, will inspire a new generation of cricketers. Hobbled by cramp during the latter stages of his innings, Maxwell smacked 10 sixes and 21 fours in his batting pyrotechnics and McDonald said it would take time to fully appreciate the magnitude of the feat. McDonald said the all-rounder was impacting batsmanship like compatriot Ricky Ponting or South African stalwart AB de Villiers did in the past. "Players take the game forward every day, and the game is better today than it was yesterday," the coach said. "Glenn Maxwell will no doubt inspire a new generation with some outrageous shots..."That's the beauty about the game, and he stretched the boundary as did AB de Villiers and Ricky Ponting in their time as well.

NEW DELHI, Sept 27 (Reuters) - By the time Lalit Kumar crouched at the starting blocks for the men's 100 metres final at the Delhi state athletics meet on Tuesday, the 20-year-old was only ever going to finish first. However, organisers suspect they pulled out after getting wind of the imminent arrival of officials from India's anti-doping agency (NADA). "An odd withdrawal is understandable, but when seven runners withdraw, you know something is fishy," Sandeep Mehta, secretary of the Delhi Athletics Association (DAA), told Reuters on Wednesday. Mehta also confirmed that some athletes from the meet did not turn up to collect their medals, raising more doping suspicions. The country ranked second behind Russia in anti-doping rule violations in a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report published in May.

LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic has experienced everything possible on a tennis court during his trophy-laden 23-year career but said he has never faced a player quite like Carlos Alcaraz. "I didn't expect him to play so well this year on grass, but he's proven he's the best player in the world," Djokovic said after his 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 defeat. I think he's got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands. After outplaying Alcaraz in a one-sided first set, Djokovic then slugged out an 85-minute second and had a point for a two-set lead in the tiebreak but dumped a backhand into the net. "Set point, I missed the backhand.

LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Carlos Alcaraz will have to kick Novak Djokovic off his Wimbledon throne in Sunday's final because he will not be given an inch, according to seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander. Alcaraz is already world number one and claimed last year's U.S. Open by beating Casper Ruud, but the challenge of Djokovic is "another universe", according to Wilander. "It's really important that Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam final before (Djokovic's career) is over. "Of course Djokovic can lose but I don't think he cares less about that any more," Wilander said. "He's going to come in and play at about 90% the whole time, dipping to maybe 85% and sometimes up to 95%.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago. Djokovic, locked at 1-1 in their head-to-head record, was looking forward to the challenge too. We're both playing well," added Djokovic as he looks to become the oldest man in the Open Era to win the grasscourt major. Now, with Federer retired and Nadal injured, Djokovic has an opportunity to stake his own claim in that unending debate and win a record 23rd grand slam title on Sunday at the French Open, surpassing the mark he currently holds with Nadal. Standing in Djokovic’s way is Casper Ruud, who has now reached three of the last five grand slam finals, including last year’s final at Roland Garros where he was dismantled 6-3 6-3 6-0 by Nadal. If Djokovic can win on Sunday, he will also return to the top of the world rankings and become the first male player to win each grand slam tournament at least three times. Casper Ruud was defeated by Nadal in last year's French Open final. That semifinal performance will galvanize Ruud ahead of the final, as he seeks to upset the odds and take a first grand slam title.

The Fed is on track to increase rates a quarter point while deliberating if that will be enough to pause the fastest rate-raising cycle in decades. Photo: olivier douliery/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesExecutives are watching the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting for clues on its inflation-fighting campaign and the potential for a so-called hard landing that could cramp consumer spending on everything from airline tickets and cars to furniture and snacks. The Fed this week is on track to increase interest rates by a quarter percentage point while deliberating whether that will be enough to then pause the fastest rate-raising cycle in four decades. The central bank’s benchmark rate stands at a range between 4.75% and 5%, and another quarter-point increase at the meeting that concludes Wednesday would lift it to a 16-year high.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration staff on Monday said Biogen's investigational ALS drug may have a "clinical benefit" on a rare and aggressive form of the disease, despite failing a broader late-stage clinical trial last year. A separate exploratory analysis of the drug suggests "a clinical benefit with a longer duration of treatment," the staff wrote. It also found that tofersen reduced levels of a protein called neurofilament light (NfL,) which is "correlated with disease severity, disease progression rate, and survival in patients with ALS," according to the FDA staff. The first is to move forward with recommending accelerated approval based on tofersen's reduction of NfL in ALS patients. "SOD1-linked ALS is a particularly rare and aggressive form of an already rare and devastating disease," said Dr. Neil Thakur, The ALS Association's chief mission officer.
Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank have all battled woes in the last week. Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank of New York both closed in recent days as a result of a run on deposits. Silicon Valley Bank had taken significant losses on bond investments, causing depositors to worry that their money would not be safe. This fear spread to customers of Signature Bank, which then sold assets at a loss to meet liquidity demands. First Republic Bank also appeared to have insufficient liquidity to weather a bank run, fueling concerns that it would be closed down.
Depositors at other banks may fear for the security of their money, and rush to withdrawal all at once. "If those lending standards tighten, that's going to cramp consumer spending — 70% of the economy — you drag forward the recession." Naturally, such a drag on consumer spending will hurt corporate earnings, leading investors to discount forward earnings expectations, Roberts said. Right now, the median 2023 earnings per share target among major Wall Street strategists is $210. That probability level is low relative to the rest of Wall Street, according to a Wall Street Journal survey that show a median probability of 65%.
Paid menstrual leave is much more common in Asia than the US or Europe. One worker told Insider menstrual leave at her Polish company made life easier in the last year. "By giving additional days off for those experiencing menstrual period pain, we acknowledge these symptoms are real." Rutkowska also praised the relative ease and discretion of requesting menstrual leave, especially in comparison to other forms of leave. She said she simply logs onto her online time sheet, fills out "menstrual leave" as the reason, and gets approved quickly.
New York CNN —Elon Musk publicly scoffed at a Twitter employee’s uncertainty about whether he had been laid off in a recent round of cuts and spoke dismissively of the employee’s disability in a series of tweets Monday night. Haraldur Thorleifsson, an Iceland-based Twitter senior director, tweeted at Musk that access to his computer had been cut off nine days earlier, when Twitter reportedly laid off some 200 employees. It’s not the first time Musk, one of the richest men in the world, has publicly mocked employees at Twitter, the company he bought for $44 billion last year. Hundreds of former Twitter employees are now taking legal action against the company, alleging broken severance promises and, in some cases, discrimination, including against disabled employees. Following the exchange with Musk, Thorleifsson said in a tweet that Twitter’s HR head had confirmed he is no longer employed at the company.
